Repsol shared on Friday, January 28, a statement in which it states that the meeting that took place between directors of the company and the general secretary of Palacio, Carlos Jacob, aimed to “listen to the complaints and demands” of the Government. The company also confirmed that said meeting was held at the Embassy of Spain, with the presence of the ambassador of the aforementioned nation.
Through a statement, Repsol maintained that the meetings with members of the State “are taking place institutionally and with the sole purpose of normalizing necessary communication, informing or agreeing on actions aimed at cleaning and remediating the environment affected” by the spill of more than 10,000 barrels of oil on the Peruvian coast.
“The meeting that took place at the Spanish Embassy with the secretary general of the presidential office, in the presence of the ambassador, followed this line, its sole purpose was to listen to the complaints and demands of the Peruvian administration, with a view to better discerning the mechanisms that allow channeling the payment of compensation that could correspond to those affected, as well as the commitments related to the cleaning and remediation of the sea and the Peruvian coast, ”reads the statement.

Along the same lines, Repsol asserted that the meeting did not discuss “exoneration of the refinery from possible responsibilities that may be determined in the corresponding administrative or criminal channels”.
“It only intended to streamline and establish specific commitments from Repsol regarding the granting of aid and the obligation of the Coastal Cleaning Refinery, to which we have committed ourselves,” the document reads.
Castillo knew of a meeting between Jaico and Repsol
The President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, was aware of the meeting that started the Secretary General of the Palacio, Carlos Jaico, with Repsol representatives on Monday, January 24 at the Spanish embassy, according to sources from the Executive to La República.

The chairman of the board of directors of La Pampilla, a Repsol refinery, Jaime Fernández-Cuesta Luca de Ten, sent a letter to the president on Saturday, January 22, in order to coordinate a meeting in the presidential office. In said congregation, the representative of Repsol would transmit the details about the spill of more than 10,000 barrels of oil on the Peruvian coast and would guarantee the company’s commitment to remedy the environmental damage.
However, according to the sources, it was decided that Jaico Carranza would know more precisely about the terms that Repsol would propose to the head of state in a previous appointment.
Minister Ramírez on Jaico: “You have to explain in what context you met with Repsol”
The Minister of the Environment, Ruben Ramirez, avoided commenting on the meeting held by the presidential secretary Carlos Jacob with directors of Repsol. The head of the Minam limited himself to saying that the official should explain under what terms the meeting took place.

“Mr. Jaico would have to explain in what context he has met (with the Repsol company). (…) The man may have asked for an explanation. I do not know. It would be wrong to advance an opinion. I have to be very cautious in what I think,” said Ramírez Mateo at a press conference.
Boluarte on meeting between Jaico and Repsol: “The president must make decisions”
The Vice President and Minister of Social Inclusion, Dina Boluarte, regretted the meeting that took place on January 24 at the Embassy of Spain, between the secretary general of the presidential office, Carlos Jaico, and the representatives of the Repsol company, and pointed out that President Pedro Castillo will have to act in the next few hours regarding it.
“I hope that President Pedro Castillo, in the minutes from now, will be making decisions regarding Mr. Jaico,” he told the press, after supervising a Cuna Más store in Carabayllo.
