Arturo Zaldívar: the tiktoker, Catholic and feminist minister

Arturo Zaldívar: the tiktoker, Catholic and feminist minister

The political scientist Fernando Dworak thinks the opposite, since he considers that in the collective imagination there is the idea that Zaldívar “bowed” to the Federal Executive, however, his position allowed him to “cape” many issues.

“He knew how to give in and know how far to go, where not to confront himself in order to get what he wanted. He had a left hand to know how to override many of the president’s things, in that sense, ”Dworak observes.

For analysts, the active participation in social networks of the president of the Court is to prepare the ground and leave behind the image of a “stuffy” minister, surrounded by books, sentences and distanced from the people, for that of a minister who defends human rights, an ally of young people, of feminism and even capable of making viral videos on TikTok.

“Surely he seeks to take the leap and is promoting himself with a view to a political future, similar to that of the retired minister and senator for Morena, Olga Sánchez Cordero, with which he leaves behind consultancies and sentences to fully enter the Legislative Palace, making politics, in government activities or, campaigning for his native entity”, considers Carriedo.

The Catholic who voted for abortion

On September 7, 2021, Zaldívar raised his hand to endorse, along with the other judges, the project of Minister Luis María Aguilar, through which the criminalization of abortion in Coahuila was declared unconstitutional, thereby setting a historical precedent for the entire country. .

“This decision (…) marks a before and after in the conquest of gender equality; it is a watershed in the fight for the rights of women and pregnant people, and a definitive step to cement a more just and egalitarian society”, Zaldívar wrote in a column in Millennium, days after the Judgment.

His vote in favor was questioned by his close circle and coming from a Catholic family, his sister asked him “why he wanted to kill babies”, while his friends “prayed for his religious conversion”, according to the minister told The New York Times.

But just with this event, the president minister made his debut on TikTok although he did so by sharing a television interview on the subject.

“Abortion in our country punishes poverty above all, poor, unprotected and forgotten girls and women are the ones who end up in jail, rich girls who have always aborted have never set foot in prison,” the video is heard with the one that achieved 22,000 views.
