After seven years Venezuela and Colombia open their border to the passage of vehicles

On January 1, the well-known Tienditas international bridge, recently named Atanasio Girardot, is reopened. Authorities from Colombia and Venezuela assured that the reopening of binational access represents a “great start to the year” and a new effort by both countries to normalize their bilateral relations. They hope that the full opening of the border will boost the economy


On January 1, 2023, Venezuela and Colombia consummate the “total opening” of their border, with the inauguration of the Tienditas binational bridge, recently named Atanasio Girardot, which will allow the passage of vehicles of all kinds, something that has not happened since 2015.

With the reopening of the pass, the authorities of both countries hope to boost the economy in this region. This is the most recent action in the normalization of diplomatic and commercial relations between neighboring nations, resumed in August with the coming to power of the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro.

On December 31, Venezuelan and Colombian authorities assured everything was ready for the opening. “Everything is ready for the inauguration of the Atanasio Girardot Binational Bridge! We continue to take firm steps for border normalization with sister Colombia, ”the ruler Nicolás Maduro wrote in a message on his Twitter account.

For his part, the Colombian ambassador in Caracas, Armando Benedetti, pointed out that the reopening of this highway is “another sign of mutual trust” between neighboring countries. He assured that the inauguration of the bridge represents a “great start to the year”, and highlighted the work of both countries for the normalization of their bilateral relations.

The Minister of Transportation, Ramón Velásquez Araguayán, reported on December 31 the completion of the repairs to the structure. He pointed out that the works in this access included the qualification of the control post for the entrance and exit of transport -through eight ticket offices- and the adaptation of spaces from which the passage of heavy-duty trucks and buses will be controlled, reviewed The nation.

Since the beginning of December, when the “total reopening” of the border was announced, Venezuela has undertaken remodeling and restoration work in this area that began with the removal of the containers that it set up as a barrier on the bridge, almost four years ago, in the midst of of political tensions with the then Colombian president, Iván Duque.
