The first Argentinian video game developer, Whitboard Games, announced the first alliance between a Latin American and a Western company in the video game industry.
The national producer of video games Whitboard Games (WG) was born in 2019 with the collaboration of Neutrón Project Accelerator, a technological project accelerator located in Mar del Plata, with the aim of researching, developing and promoting technological initiatives to promote the Argentine industry.
With funding from Neutron, Whiteboard Games announced at the end of October 2022, the first partnership with the leading German company gameforgelaunching the game “I See Red” to the world market.
During its launch, the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo “Wado” de Pedrocelebrated the importance of this alliance and highlighted that it constitutes “an example for many young people that it is possible to work in Argentina, because its developers are all video game designers who They had many offers to leave Argentina, but they decided to stay and work here.“.
In 2020, “I See Red” emerged as an academic project of a group of students, who, after graduating, decided to bet on their project: “The slogan was to make a group video game good enough to sell it to the market, we did it, we graduated and we thought: why don’t we follow it? We automatically went out to look for financing,” said Luciano Muselladirector of Whitboard Games.
Financing for this type of project was one of the main barriers, according to Musella, because it “requires money and a high demand for personnel to develop the different stages of the game.”
Due to this situation, one of the game developers contacted Neutrón to discuss the possibility of financing it, without knowing that they would found the first commercial and national video game company in Argentina: “We proposed to finance the game and they replied that they would not only finance it but also that they wanted us to found a national company that hosts many games,” he stressed.
The recent Argentine company (WG) is made up of 22 people from various professions: programmers, 3D artists, modelers, animators, illustrators, composers, music producers, among others.
After this union I See Red joined the catalog of games for a single player, and at the same time established itself as the first game from a Latin American studio funded by a leading western company.
Regarding the first experiences in the industry, Musella mentioned that he worked as a programmer processing data and stressed that job opportunities in the sector are “immense giants” and appear “immediately” after entering the race.
“I discovered a sea of possibilities, and a number of people who are looking to hire you just for the fact that they are doing this degree, so there is a huge demand for work, even before you graduate.”
Likewise, the founder of the company highlighted that Argentina has interesting aspects for an industry that focuses on the high qualification of young talent, and pointed out that it is essential to have connectivity and Internet-enabled devices in order to expand job opportunities across the country.
Referring to the game, he explained that it stands out for its art style, “its unique narrative” and its particular protagonist: “It is about a rigid person who follows the law until he suffers a tragic situation, the objective of the player is to discover what happened to him and why he seeks revenge”he concluded.
