The day it (didn’t) snow in Miami

Nieve, Miami

MIAMI, United States. – Following the low temperatures in Miami last weekend and early this week, many residents of South Florida have once again flirted with the idea that, one day, snow will fall in the southernmost part of the state where the sun always shines

However, that day has already happened: almost 46 years ago, on January 19, 1977, Miami woke up with a thin layer of frost that shone until 9:00 in the morning, when it began to disappear due to the effect of lightning. of the sun.

Although the weather milestone has often been published, it is still unknown to many people.

Of course, with the very low temperatures this Christmas, the desire to see snow in Miami was triggered again. The news that, again, it had snowed in the city, even went viral on social networks.

It was all due to a video posted on social media that showed the alleged fall of snowflakes in the vicinity of Hard Rock Stadium, the headquarters of the Miami Dolphins.

Unfortunately for the enthusiastic lovers of snow, they were not real flakes, but one of the Christmas surprises that the Hard Rock Stadium prepared for the visitors.

Just like this Christmas, it’s not the first time Floridians think it could snow. In 2018, the then state governorrick scott urged tourists and residents to prepare for extreme cold conditions and even the possibility of snow accumulation (in the northern part of the state).

Scott called for preparing “for extremely cold weather conditions, including possible accumulations of snow, sleet or ice.”

The advisory follows the announcement by the National Weather Service, which issued winter storm watches and winter weather advisories today for Florida counties of Baker, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Madison, Nassau, Suwannee, Taylor and Union.
