Fiasco in activation of referendum monopolizes reflectors in Venezuela

In response to the request presented by the so-called Venezuelan Movement for the Recall and other adherent organizations, the National Electoral Council (CNE) carried out last Wednesday the day of reception of expressions of will prior to the activation of a possible referendum.

For the celebration of the process, the electoral authorities installed a total of 1,200 centers in the 24 federal entities of the country, which registered a low turnout of voters.

In this regard, the president of the National Electoral Board, Tania D’Amelio, reported at a press conference that the procedure resulted in the receipt of just over 42,000 expressions of will, as certified by witnesses from civil organizations and for political proponents of the request.

Likewise, it indicated that no state in the country achieved 20 percent of the electoral registration required for the activation of the recall referendum, as established by the current legal system.

Therefore, the CNE declared the request to revoke the presidential mandate inadmissible, and also declared the inadmissibility of a new initiative in this regard against President Nicolás Maduro during the rest of his term in office (2019-2025).

In this regard, the Venezuelan president attributed the “resounding” failure of the Venezuelan opposition to the coup agenda promoted by the extreme right l coup that this same political group has practiced in Venezuela in recent years.

During his speech at the opening ceremony of the judicial year, the head of state indicated that for the process of receiving expressions of will, the National Electoral Council granted all the conditions for the collection of signatures, but the opposition barely managed to summon the 1 .1 percent of registered voters.

In turn, the president of the National Assembly (Parliament), Jorge Rodríguez, considered that the 42 thousand signatures collected by the opposition to call the recall referendum against the president of Venezuela constituted the most “poor and deserted” expression that the opposition has ever known. political history of the South American country.
