Among the 166 National Police officers who will retire as of January 1, 2023, there is a key man for the investigations against the former coup leader Pedro Castillo: Major PNP David Medina Guillén.
Medina is known by his colleagues as “Aquiles” and is a prominent force who is currently the right hand of PNP Colonel Harvey Colchado, whom Castillo sought to remove by all means.
The National Police Retirement Pass Qualification Board, chaired by Commander General Raúl Alfaro, has proposed the departure of David Medina for the reason of “cadre renewal.”
According to sources consulted by Peru21this causal is invoked when the policeman has no further projection to continue ascending in the institution.
However, both Colchado and the prosecutor Marita Barreto, coordinator of the special team, have asked General Alfaro to keep Medina in his post.
On November 22, Colonel Colchado sent a letter to the Intelligence Directorate (Digimin) requesting the ratification of his staff, including ‘Aquiles’.
Barreto did the same on December 20 in a letter addressed to Alfaro, in which he also recalls that he made that request on November 25.
The PNP high command can change its mind until December 31. According to sources, until today at least there has been no response from him.
Meanwhile, the operation deployed today that culminated in the arrest of six people -among them three PNP generals accused of paying bribes to get their promotions- bore the name ‘Aquiles’ in honor of the largest PNP.
