MADRID, Spain.- A total of 34,675 Cuban migrants arrived at the southern border of the United States during the month of November, which represents 21% more than those who arrived in October (28,848). While a total of 35,849 Cubans entered the northern country through all border points, according to recent data from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office.
Through a release The entity highlighted that in said period there was a considerable increase in Cuban and Nicaraguan migrants intercepted at the border.
In November 2022, 68,044 migrants arrived at the southwest land border from Cuba or Nicaragua, representing 35% of arrivals.
The CPB noted that this increase is due to “the large number of people fleeing failed communist regimes in Nicaragua and Cuba.”
“People from Mexico and northern Central America accounted for just 30% of unique encounters in November, a significant drop from the 53% they accounted for a year ago, as more migrants arrive from a variety of other countries, including Cuba and Nicaragua”, the information indicates.
The number of people arriving at the southwest land border in November 2022 was 204,155, an increase of 4% from the previous month, largely driven by higher numbers of people arriving from Cuba and Nicaragua.
From October 1, 2022, the beginning of the fiscal year, until the beginning of December, United States Coast Guard (USCG) crews had intercepted at sea more than 3,300 Cubans that were trying to reach US shores.
In that short period, the figure represents more than half of the rafters detained during the past fiscal year, in which the USCG detained 6,182 Cuban migrants.
