4 Aspects organizations should consider when migrating their data to the cloud

The emergence of new technologies forces companies to maintain a permanent process of updating or restructuring their architectures and in this sense one of the trends is the ability to migrate from a physical storage of their data to a virtual one or what is known as the “cloud”, which can be public, private or hybrid.

According to projections by the International Data Corporation (IDC), by 2022 more than half of the companies in Latin America will integrate cloud management, through their public and private clouds, through the implementation of unified technologies, tools and management processes. and hybrids. “Organizations must consider many factors to successfully take this step of migrating to the cloud, from the maturity, experience and current security measures of the company”, according to the appreciation of Luis Enrique Sánchez, director of Wingu Networks .

For this reason, it is important that companies or organizations consider that the service specialist who will support them in the process can assess whether they already have these requirements or the combination of any of these components, to define whether they are ready to move on to the migration phases. towards the cloud.

To delve deeper into this topic below, Sánchez explains some of the aspects that he recommends companies or organizations should consider when making the decision to migrate to the cloud:

● Discovery of the maturity of your business: You must determine at what level your organization is, that is, make an analysis and understanding of the business to determine your technological migration strategy for your applications and data. “The most important aspect is maturity, since there are clients that do not yet have a cloud strategy, while there are others that are just experimenting,” adds the manager.

● Personalized advice: Organizations should allow the cloud services specialist they chose to have hard data on the state of the current architecture of their business, that is, how many platforms? How many servers exist today? and how do they interact with each other? and this gives visibility to the panorama, since that current architecture is not always necessarily the one that must be taken to the cloud.

● Design the architecture according to your needs: It is important that the partner and its certified architects design an architecture that allows you to take advantage of the different public cloud resources according to your needs and provide you with advice on what the next steps are,

what are the benefits you are going to get and why you should do it that way.

● Define the migration plan to the cloud: With a much more complete panorama based on the current architecture information of the company, then it will be possible to proceed to the phases of the migration project that entails certain stages. That is where the partner proposes the plan based on the information obtained and aligned with the client’s business and technological objectives.

Within the migration to the cloud, there are obviously different types of migrations such as migrations of databases, servers, sources or platform data storage, etc. Each public cloud has different particularities and the partner chosen for the process must be qualified and certified with specialist engineers in each of the clouds that allows you to:

● Optimize the different resources.

● Save costs.

● And have the best architecture in terms of security, latency, resilience.

There is a whole series of conditions that you must take into account when you have a private cloud strategy and you have the need to make a migration, or when you change it to a public cloud strategy, since you are delegating most of the protection and responsibility of the hardware of the facilities and provision of your equipment to the cloud provider. It is important to ensure and clarify the needs and objectives between the parties involved in the process, in order to successfully create a cloud migration strategy.
