Colombia raises regional emergency fund for the Caribbean

President Iván Duque proposed this Friday the creation of a regional emergency fund for the Caribbean, a region that was “with immense difficulties” to access mitigation resources and vaccines against covid-19.

(Duque asks for “finesse” in rate hikes so as not to stop the reactivation).

“Colombia wants to propose that we have a tool, a regional fund for this type of situation and that we can convene the IDB, the World Bank and the CAF, to have an effective response and that allows us from the FOME’s own experience to face the pandemic. , that a multilateral vehicle of that scope can always be available and that it is always available to face any circumstance”, Duque said during the installation of the II Colombia-Caricom Ministerial Summit to be held this Friday in Barranquilla.

It should be noted that the Caribbean Community (Caricom) is an integration mechanism made up, for the most part, of the islands of the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean. Colombia participates as an observer country of the bloc.

In his speech, President Duque showed Colombia’s commitment to being a representative actor in the region, for which they seek the creation of a cooperation agreement in the short, medium and long term with the continental bloc.

(‘We hope to welcome Ecuador to the Pacific Alliance’: Duque).

“We want to strengthen South-South cooperation and, in addition, Colombia wants to establish a short, medium and long-term cooperation framework with labor, educational, scientific exchanges, support for natural disaster management, security, and economic reactivation,” added the national president.
