El Burrito Sabanero, more than 40 years brightening up Christmas

A classic of Christmas music and perhaps the most popular Christmas carol that accompanies the posadas at Christmas and that never goes out of style is “The Burrito Sabanero”, but you know where this catchy lyrics came from and how it ended up being interpreted by a group of children. The first and most listened to version of Burrito Sabanero had its origins in 1975, 47 years ago, when Ricardo Cuenci, the boy who gives voice to the main lyrics of the Christmas carol, was barely 8 years old. It all happened in a recording studio in Venezuela, after the composer Hugo César Blanco wrote the lyrics.

According to Ricardo Cuenci himself, on the YouTube program “La Cata Musical”, in the first instance the Burrito Sabanero was interpreted by the soloist and also Venezuelan Simón Narciso Díaz Márquez, however this version did not like the composer who had thought that the Christmas carol It was better in children’s voices, so he contacted the Venezuela children’s choir “La Rondallita”, of which Cuenci, who is currently 55 years old, was a part.

Cuenci recounted that he became the main vocalist of this Christmas carol because the boy who had been chosen did not like the composer Narciso Díaz either and that he (Cuenci) spent his time in the studio singing the chorus through the corridors and humming the song, when they heard him they asked him to sing and that’s how it all started.

Cuenci relates that at that time he did not pronounce the letter S very well because of what Mi Burrito said. tabanero and in effect this is how the Burrito Sabanero was recorded and marketed with the lyrics you.

This popular Christmas melody has been interpreted by artists such as Juanes, Elvis Crespo and even the great Ricardo Montaner.
In addition, the Christmas carol was interpreted and adapted into the English language entitled ‘My Little Donkey’ and was included by Billboard magazine as part of its list of “The 100 best Christmas songs of all time”.
