These are the 12 victories and defeats that marked AMLO's 2022

9. March in favor of the INE
The slogan “the INE is not touched” brought together thousands of Mexicans who went out to march on November 13 in Mexico City. It was one of the largest marches against the proposals of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in four years of management.

Although the Government of Mexico City estimated the attendance of 60,000 people, organizers of the mobilization assured that there were more than 200,000 attendees.

“They need more. To get an idea, I reckon that’s why they didn’t come to the Zócalo. They would not have filled even half of the Zócalo, they must have been about 60 – 50,000. The Zócalo fills up with 120,000. I hope they follow him, that they intend to fill the Zócalo”, challenged the president when referring to the march.

10. The most violent six-year term

Although 2022 is set to have a reduction in homicides, the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will be the most violent in the history of Mexico.

Last May, his administration exceeded 120,463 violent deaths that occurred during the six-year term of PAN member Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, with whom the so-called war against drug trafficking began.

It will be this year when his government also exceeds the intentional homicides reported in the six-year term of PRI member Enrique Peña Nieto. According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), between December 1, 2018 and November 30, 2022, there were 137,895 violent deaths, so it is 18,171 away from reaching the number of violence left by its predecessor.

11. Work visas in the US
The government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expected 300,000 work visas from the United States, which would help curb the risks generated by migrating irregularly, however, that number was not reached.

After various dialogues and meetings, the United States agreed to deliver 24,000 humanitarian visas to Venezuelan migrants, as well as an additional 65,000 work visas, of which 25,000 are for Central Americans and the rest will be mainly for Mexicans.

Weeks before the United States reported how many visas it would deliver, the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, had anticipated that it would be 150,000.

“The American government agreed to grant 300,000 temporary work visas in the first instance, 150,000 of which will be for Mexicans or foreigners who are in Mexico today waiting for the possibility of migrating north,” he said last June during a meeting with businessmen from the north of the country.

12. Expulsion of its ambassador in Peru
His constant statements about the political crisis in Peru after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo as president, led the government of Dina Boluarte to declare persona non grata and expel its ambassador Pablo Monroy.

For days the president criticized the “harassment” of the political and economic elites towards Pedro Castillo, affirmed that his relationship with Peru was on pause and granted asylum to his wife Lilia Paredes and children, which was considered by the Peruvian government as “interference”.

“The decision has been adopted in response to the continuous and reiterated statements made by the President of the United Mexican States, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on the political situation in Peruthe same ones that constitute an unacceptable interference in internal affairs, in clear violation of the principle of non-intervention,” reported Foreign Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi.
