Five months have passed since the now-suspended congressman Freddy Diaz was denounced for alleged rape of a worker in his parliamentary office. And just yesterday, the Subcommittee on Constitutional Accusations Parliament approved the final report that recommends disqualifying him for a period of 10 years for the exercise of public function.
According to the Internal Regulations of the Congress, the decision – which was approved unanimously (18 votes) – must now go to the Permanent Commission. This procedure, specified the head of the subcommittee, Lady Camones, would be carried out no later than next Wednesday the 28th and the case, she commented, could be seen in plenary session the first week of January.
In this context, Camones recalled that the suspension that the Plenary applied to Díaz for 120 days expires at the end of January 2022, for which reason, he said, “it is urgent that the Permanent Commission summon an accelerated session.”
He also specified that what was approved by the subgroup is specifically related to the constitutional infraction committed by Díaz for having made an “inappropriate use of Parliament facilities and having poured liquor in them”, but does not refer to the crime of rape, for which which the suspended legislator is currently being investigated by the Public Ministry.
THE FACTS
As is public, the events were recorded on July 27 at the congressman’s office, located in the congressional building on Jirón Azángaro. That night, the then legislator from Alianza para el Progreso –according to the testimony of the aggrieved woman– “pressured her to toast” for the election of Camones as president of the Legislature. There, moreover, he would have doped, outraged and even kidnapped her by preventing her from leaving the premises. To justify the execrable act, Díaz later maintained that he had a “sporadic relationship” with the complainant, a version that was emphatically denied by her.
