Moquegua: Construction of a 5MMC Asana reservoir is approved

The Anglo American mining company, from Moquegua, announced the financing and construction of a system to store 5 million cubic meters (MMC) of water in the Asana River, a water resource that will be for the exclusive use of the population, especially agriculture.

The Asana system will be designed to store excess water in the rainy season that ends up in the sea without being used. Even these volumes of water have caused damage to crops and in the urban area of Moquegua in different years.

Studies will begin in 2023

The Pasto Grande Regional Special Project (PERPG), in charge of managing Moquegua’s water reserves, will be the owner of the project and final operator of the infrastructure.

Likewise, in 2023 it is planned to start the design of the project engineering to ensure that the infrastructure is sustainable in the long term, for the benefit of current and future generations of the Moquegua region.

It will have twice the capacity.

This initiative represents an additional contribution to the commitment assumed by the company at the dialogue table (2012). Originally this system was going to have a capacity of 2.5 MMC financed through the Moquegua Development Fund; however, the private company communicated its decision to finance and execute an infrastructure with twice the capacity.

The proposal was unanimously approved by the Quellaveco Monitoring Committee in its recent session held last Thursday with the participation of representatives of the Regional Government of Moquegua, provincial municipalities of Mariscal Nieto, Ilo and Sánchez Cerro, PERPG and others.
