The fact that the new administration of Peru has declared the Mexican ambassador in Lima, Pablo Monroy, unpleasant it’s a pride bell for the government of Mexico, emphasized President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Yesterday morning, in Villahermosa, Tabasco, the federal president stressed that the ambassador -present at the conference- fulfilled his mission based on the historical tradition of asylum in our country.

It is a sign of pride that our ambassador is declared persona non grata for fulfilling the mission of saving lives and asserting our foreign policy, the best of our foreign policy, which is the right of asylumhe stressed.

He considered that Monroy’s work achieved that goal, and therefore it is a merit and left aloft the name of Mexico and the prestige of its foreign policy.

In addition, he pointed out that Lilia Paredes, wife of deposed President Pedro Castillo, and her two children, who are already in our country and have been granted asylum, will be protected. We are going to be aware of them, helping them, supporting them. You are not alone, that is the message for President Castillo and for all the citizens of Peru.

For his part, the diplomat – who arrived in the country from Lima on Thursday night – expressed the Mexican government’s concern about the crisis in Peru and said that due process is trusted to Castillo and that attacks on fundamental guarantees are avoided. of the population.

There have been certain acts, such as in the Congress of the Republic, in which there could be doubt as to whether they followed the procedures established by law. For example, the withdrawal of the immunity that the presidents enjoy in Peru, a preliminary hearing must take place to be able to withdraw the immunity of the presidents and proceed to investigate and judge them. There are certain questions about whether this was followed to the letter (in the case of Castillo), with which we continue to follow up, understand the procedures and raise concerns when necessary.Monroy said.

He reported that the Peruvian authorities handed him the judicial file against Castillo’s wife. Given this, he remarked that a penal chamber in the Andean nation declared unfounded the obligation to appear that had been set for Paredes to verify that he was on Peruvian soil.

– Could it be extradited if there was a request? –She was asked.

“An extradition request would have to be received, but the political asylum that Mexico has granted has broad effects,” he replied.

He stressed that, in accordance with the 1954 asylum convention, in principle this right cannot be granted to people accused of a crime or sentenced, and the case of Paredes is in the investigation stage. However, Regardless of that, it is Mexico, as an asylum state, that determines the nature of the crimes that are charged to the person requesting asylum, that is, if for Mexico it is a political crime and the Peruvian state has to accept it that way..

López Obrador clarified any doubt: We will defend the case.
