Provea calls for the release of political prisoners: "We are in time for a Christmas miracle"

Organizations that defend human rights, political leaders and even the Church join the request that political prisoners be released on Christmas Eve. Foro Penal counts 274 people victims of imprisonment for political reasons

The NGO Provea, dedicated to the defense of human rights, advocated for the release of political prisoners this December 24, a festive date that promotes family union and good wishes.

Through his Twitter account, provide He argued since early in the morning that there was still enough time to promote a “Christmas miracle”, freeing the more than 270 prisoners who remain locked up for political reasons and allowing them to spend time with their families.

«We are still in time for a Christmas miracle. This is a time of reunion. We ask for a humanitarian measure for all political prisoners in Venezuela, unjustly detained,” reads the publication.

Under the hashtag #ChristmasWithoutPoliticalPrisoners, Provea promotes the idea that all those unjustly detained can spend time with their families and wake up with their loved ones.

Other organizations participate in this campaign, such as Justice, Encounter and Forgivenesswho also used their social networks to demand a Christmas without political prisoners for one more year, since this has been the request in recent Christmases, before the deaf ears of a State that does not respond to the request.

“Political prisoners and their families are victims of a justice system that revictimizes them, that does not respect their rights and that does not guarantee due process. We stand in solidarity with you and maintain our commitment to continue fighting for your freedom,” they published.

Juan Guaidó also spoke out in defense of political prisoners and accused the government of Nicolás Maduro of encouraging them to spend a Christmas separated by “the persecution and indolence of the dictatorship.”

Even the Bishop of Mérida and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Caracas, Cardinal Baltazar Porras, agreed to this request in a Christmas message sent to Venezuelans.

The letter calls on “those who have the power to make decisions” to grant measures that favor people deprived of liberty for crimes of conscience so that they return home and spend Christmas with the family.

“This would be a gesture of goodwill, humanity, and even political magnanimity, which could contribute much to the much-needed reconciliation and social peace,” wrote Cardinal Porras.

the NGO Criminal Forum He affirmed last Thursday that in Venezuela there are 274 detainees whom he considers political prisoners, of whom 261 are men and 13 are women. In addition, 123 are civilians and 151 military.
