The president of the National Assembly (AN) elected in 2015, Juan Guaidó, celebrated the US court ruling that detracted from the arguments presented by the defense to consider Alex Saab as a diplomatic envoy of the Venezuelan government.
For Guaidó, Judge Robert N. Scola’s decision confirms what “all Venezuelans know”, assuring that the Colombian businessman was never a diplomatic official appointed by Nicolás Maduro to negotiate the purchase of food and medicine for the population, as assured by the chavismo.
“Justice in the United States confirms what we all know, Alex Saab is not a diplomat, he is a criminal who stole food money from Venezuelans and bribed deputies in 2020 to end the National Assembly and the Presidency in Charge. They do not confuse the world or justice,” Guaidó commented in his twitter account.

The US justice argued in the ruling that, if Saab were a special envoy on a diplomatic mission, this immunity “should have the consensus of the countries that Saab had to transit”, an element that could not be proven by the defense, according to the judge. .

With this argument discarded, the trial against Saab continues. The businessman faces a charge for money laundering, after the United States Attorney’s Office requested the dismissal of seven other charges against the businessman accused of being a figurehead for Maduro, to comply with the conditions requested by Cape Verde, where Saab was arrested, to approve his extradition to the United States.
Saab’s defense can resort to other appeals to buy time and try to get a ruling in favor that allows the release of the businessman. Meanwhile, Chavismo defends the figure of Saab with street acts and holds discussions in Parliament to repudiate Saab’s imprisonment.
The president of the National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, ruled against the ruling by qualifying it as “legal barbarity” and arguing that all the lawyers who reviewed the appeal requested by the defense agree.
