Former French Formula 1 driver Philippe Streiff has died at the age of 67, F1Media said on Saturday. the official communication body of the organization.

“I am saddened to learn of the death of Philippe Streiff. He displayed incredible courage and determination throughout his life”declared F1 president Stefano Domenicali in a tribute tweet.

Streiff had suffered a terrible accident in F1 during private tests to test tiress for the French AGS team in 1989 on the Brazilian circuit of Jacarepagua, in Rio de Janeiro. As a result of the accident, he became a quadriplegic.

The pilot born in 1955 has since established his life to the defense of people with some type of disability.

His accident contributed to the F1 authorities improving safety and the medical infrastructures of the circuits.
