Mea culpa for not changing anything

Cuba, Díaz-Canel

Havana Cuba. – This month, the National Assembly of Popular Power endorsed immobility and absolute power by acclaming the ruler of the Island, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and with the tangle of laws to supposedly comply with the popular decision contained in the Constitution of 2019.

Cuba’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is estimated to have increased by 2% in 2022, half of what was projected due to the low growth in tourism, and by 2023 it aspires to 3%. The increases are negligible considering that they are estimated on top of the large decreases that have occurred since 2020. Inflation and low wages will remain until the increase in supply is achieved, the budget deficit is controlled, the expenditures of certain sectors decrease, and the increase in foreign currency income, reported in the most recent session of Parliament the unshakable Alejandro Gil Fernández.

Miguel Díaz-Canel tried to show his human fibers to win over the population, by expressing dissatisfaction for not having been able to achieve the results that the people need. However, the televised session of the Assembly was little followed by Cubans, disbelieving and hungry due to the lack of food and money to face inflation, and overwhelmed by queues, large electricity bills despite prolonged blackouts , the very scarce transportation, and the lack of essential medicines to survive.

To cajole the people, January 3 was declared a holiday exceptionally, and pork began to be sold at 250 pesos a pound in large pieces, unaffordable for a large part of the population.

When listening to Miguel Díaz-Canel say that many things are laughable, since the laws on food sovereignty, cattle and fishing are absurd, since food is not produced, the animals decrease and the fishermen cannot fish in the waters of his little archipelago, I hallucinated.

These have been painful truisms for any Creole with common sense, who for decades emigrated from their fields, mountains, rivers and seas to the cities and abroad, in search of opportunities.

Finally, the validity of the analyzes and recommendations of the economist would be recognized. Oscar Espinosa Chepe, and of many of the 75 prisoners of conscience of the Black Spring of 2003, I thought. Just a few days before being arrested, he had written articles on the necessary agrarian restructuring and the free passage to the initiative and creativity of Cubans. He was then sentenced to 20 years in prison, after being fired from work.

With his statements, the Cuban ruler was catapulted into the international media by the abduction of sincerity or mental weakness.

Also outstanding was the call by the Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, to break the triangle made up of necessity, possibility and greed, which foster situations of corruption and crime. Marrero highlighted the General State Directives for the confrontation with “illegals, rascals, lumpen, lazy and corrupt”, the elimination of the Groups Against Coleros and Speculators that organize the queues in the stores, as well as the sale controlled by family nuclei in the stores.

The emphasis on continuing to implement measures so that the state company “truly exercises its role as the main economic subject of the economic and social development model” also stood out.

Since August 1998, based on the successful experiences of military companies, business improvement began in 1,411 entities, which was only completed in 19.

Díaz-Canel concluded his closing speech of the session by expressing: “My dissatisfactions are personal, acknowledging them helps me to visualize the paths to overcome them. To the brave Cuban people, infinite gratitude”.

The issues addressed by the deputies must be analyzed on time. The only certainty is that the difficulties will continue, possibly with fewer blackouts and food. Despite acknowledging that the hundreds of measures approved have not given the expected results, the authorities do not open up to the free exercise of the potential of Cubans. Misery and famine further threaten the Island.
