Moquegua: Anglo American will build a water storage system for agriculture

The mining company Anglo American, in charge of the Quellaveco mine, will build a system that will store 5 million cubic meters of water from the Asana River in so that it can be used for agriculture by the population.

“This initiative represents an additional contribution to the commitment assumed by the company at the Dialogue Table (2012). Originally, this system was going to have a capacity of 2.5 MMC financed through the Moquegua Development Fund. However, n has decided to go beyond the commitment and communicated its decision to finance and execute an infrastructure with double the capacity. The proposal was unanimously approved by the Quellaveco Monitoring Committee at its recent session held this Thursday, December 22,” the company reported.

The aforementioned meeting was attended by representatives of the Regional Government of Moquegua, the provincial municipalities of Mariscal Nieto, Ilo and Sánchez Cerro, civil society of Moquegua and Ilo, the Tumilaca, Pocata, Coscore, and Tala Community, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM), the Moquegua Development Fund and the Pasto Grande Special Project.

In 2023, it is planned to start the engineering design of the project to ensure that the infrastructure is sustainable in the long term, for the benefit of current and future generations of the Moquegua region.

The Pasto Grande Regional Special Project (PERPG)as manager of the Moquegua water reserves management, will be the owner of the project and final operator of the infrastructure.

The Asana system will be designed to store excess water in the rainy season that ends up in the sea without being used. These volumes of water have even caused damage to crops and in the urban area of Moquegua in different years. With this system, not only will the Asana River water flow be contained in the rainy season, but the resource will be made available to the population, especially for agriculture.

The Quellaveco Monitoring Committee recognized the significant contribution of anglo american as an additional and complementary contribution to the agreements of the Dialogue Table. The Asana system not only means more water for Moquegua, it also represents Anglo American’s willingness to go beyond its commitments, contributing to the development of the Moquegua region and promoting social sustainability with Quellaveco.
