“They fix it on one side and it explodes on the other”: Neighbors of El Canal denounce leaks

Salideros, El Canal

Havana Cuba. – “We have always had problems because these streets cannot withstand the amount of water that passes through that conduit, which explodes,” say residents of the El Canal (Cerro) neighborhood, a few meters from the Albear aqueductconsidered one of the marvels of Cuban civil engineering.

According to Tania Rodríguez, a resident of the area, the residents of that community have had to deal, for around 20 years, with drinking water leaks, which, she says, have even “linked” with sewage on some occasions.

“This driver, about 20 years ago they invented it here in [del barrio]. I say that it had to have been for [la Calzada de] Vía Blanca, because the streets of this community are not so good to support this type of drivers. From that date to here we have always had problems with water,” Rodríguez explained.

The interviewee also explained that the leaks are mostly caused by the pressure with which the water reaches the area, given the proximity of the neighborhood to the Albear Aqueduct, and also by the poor quality of the material used to make the pipes, according to the workers in charge. of the repairs.

“They fix it on the one hand and it is exploited on the other. We have been left with all these holes ”, lamented the woman.

During the repairs, he specified, “the backhoe broke what was also healthy” and affected the gas and sewage pipes. “Since they put this conductor here, we have never been happy with the water problem,” Rodríguez lamented.

The Cuban also assures that, despite the proximity to the Albear Aqueduct, on occasions they have been “up to five days without drinking water service” or that, even, “the water has arrived contaminated.”

“The last time what we were able to take was dirty water, even if it was to bathe because the pipe in the corner burst and the stream reached the height of the post [de electricidad]. Several residents of the last streets of the Canal even went up here to get water. So I don’t know what is real and wonderful about Havana, if we never have peace of mind with this problem here, there are always leaks here,” he said.

During a tour of the Canal, CubaNet He was able to verify at least five drinking water leaks and two sewage leaks in different avenues of the neighborhood.

Magnolia Vázquez, another of the residents in the area, also explained to CubaNet that the water reached the houses “every other day” although “not always with force”.
