Basque refugee Asier Guridi denounced being harassed by national guards

The Basque refugee Asier Guridi denounced this Thursday, December 22, that officials of the National Guard (GN) who guard the headquarters of the Administrative Service for Identification, Migration and Aliens (Saime) located in Plaza Miranda threatened to “deport” him and that they “restricted” him. their right to free movement.

Guridi began a continuous sit-in in front of Saime’s main headquarters in November, to demand that they grant him an identity card.

“El Saime has repeatedly ignored written requests for my identity card; he refuses to deliver a sealed copy of the documents and folders that have been entered into said body; in order to further facilitate the repeated administrative silence in the face of identity card applications, “he said in November, before launching his protest.

Last December Guridi began a hunger strike in front of the Spanish Consulate in Caracas, to demand identity documents, which both Venezuela and the European country denied him. Days later he suspended it. On December 7, 2021, the National Commission for Refugees (Conare) gave him a document that recognized his refugee status, but even so he did not have identity documents to be able to lead a legal life in Venezuela.

Guridi: “Frightened and intimidated”

Through a video posted on the social network Twitter, this Thursday, December 22, the Basque citizen records the military officials who have “frightened, threatened, intimidated and restricted his right to free movement.” In the video he also assures that the uniformed men violate articles 50, 51 and 57 of the Venezuelan Constitution.

Guridi is 52 years old. He is in Venezuela seeking to avoid what he considers a “persecution and revenge of the Spanish State”, accusing the Spanish Civil Guard of being responsible for a “brutal torture” to which he was subjected in 1992 and until 1997, a time that took place in various prisons.

Since 2005 he has lived in Caracas, where he had a son who was born in 2008 and who is currently under illegal status in Spain.
