In an interview with the Mexican outlet Milenio, Monroy specified that Paredes Navarro and his children appeared at the embassy one day after the former president will try to unilaterally close Congressestablish an emergency government and intervene in the justice system.
“The request was the day after the events. On Thursday, December 8, when Mrs. Lydia Paredes and their two minor children appeared at the embassy and requested political asylum, expressing fear for their lives, for their integrity, for their freedom.” declared the ambassador.
“Of course, Mexico, the embassy and I, in accordance with the long history of political asylum that our country has maintained, proceeded to receive them. We evaluated all the circumstances for this type of case, we communicated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as provided by our law, the procedure established in the law on the matter was carried out and the Government of Mexico decided to grant diplomatic asylum, political asylum in his diplomatic modality, from that moment on,” he added.

The Embassador Paul Monroy pointed out that political asylum for the former president Pedro Castillo cannot materialize because he is currently in pretrial detention within the framework of the investigation for the alleged crimes of rebellion, conspiracy, abuse of authority and serious disturbance of public peace.
