MADRID, Spain.- Republican Senators Marco Rubio, Rick Scott (Florida) and Jim Risch (Idaho) asked United States President Joe Biden to maintain the restrictions on US companies so that they do not trade with Cuban military entities.
In a letter sent this Tuesday to Biden, the senators stressed that in compliance with the national security of the United States and the historical support for the search for freedom of the Cuban people, democracy and respect for basic human rights, his administration should not rescind the Torricelli Act or the Helms-Burton Act.
Just as they point out that these restrictions could be lifted only when the Cuban government holds free and fair elections, shows respect for basic civil liberties and human rights, releases all political prisoners, and establishes a free market economic system.
The letter recalls that on January 18, 2018, the United States prohibited Americans from participating in direct financial operations, transactions with entities and sub-entities under the control or acting on behalf of the military, intelligence and security services of the regime.
If these measures are eliminated, it would be “seen as a reward to the regime for its oppression,” the senators specify.
The document also indicates that the Cuban government is considered one of the main state sponsors of terrorism in the world.
Marco Rubio, Rick Scott and Jim Risch reminded Joe Biden that from the beginning of his term he promised a foreign policy “focused on the defense of democracy and the protection of human rights”; Therefore, the American people and the Cuban people, “longing for respect for human rights and rights on the Island, expect him to fulfill his promises.”
