In addition to mourning his death, the communicator described Valdés Sánchez as one of his mentors and role models after his arrival in the United States.
“I will never forget the day he called me and offered me to be the image of the store that he created and grew with so much effort. Since then, she always advised me and I was nourished by her wisdom, her humility and her discipline, ”said the presenter.
“Thank you my dear Rubén for having been in my life and for giving me the opportunity to be in yours and your family. Thank you for leaving such a great legacy of kindness, entrepreneurship, sacrifice, and family values. Thank you for always collaborating with the noble causes of our community. I know that from heaven you will always enlighten us. Rest in peace in eternity”, added Ballmajó.
Valdés Sánchez left Cuba during the Mariel boatlift in 1980. He, his wife Marta, and their daughter Elein moved to Puerto Rico, where one of his brothers lived. There, Rubén worked as a salesman for some of the local vendors, selling a variety of products such as sunglasses, wristwatches, and posters. After approximately two years of working for others, he decided to move his growing family to the United States to try to start his own business.
Starting in 1984, he made efforts to grow the VALSAN chain of stores, well known by the Cuban community in Miami.
