National Party senator Sebastián Da Silva described drug trafficker Sebastián Marset’s lawyer, Alejandro Balbi, as “unscrupulous.”
“The way to solve the problems is to find the origins and attack them. In this case, there is an unfortunate situation, an unscrupulous man called Dr. (Alejandro) Balbi, who made use and abuse of trust given and people who sinned naiveto,” he noted.
“Balbi beat all of Uruguay, and that is the true truth“, he assured.
Balbi’s actions in the Marset case were as follows: on October 20, Marset was imprisoned in Dubai, and told by telephone that “he is fine” and that the prison conditions “are dignified and adequate.” There, Alejandro Balbi asks the consulate to issue a letter ensuring that Marset will be able to process a Uruguayan passport. The also vice president of Nacional had already mistakenly sent the mention to the former Uruguayan ambassador in the United Arab Emirates, to whose links with soccer he appealed to ask for help to internalize with local legislation.
Then, the process was processed and the passport course to Marset was enabled by Balbi’s management.
Then, at the beginning of November, the then Vice Chancellor Carolina Ache received a message from the Undersecretary of the Interior, Guillermo Maciel where he was warned that Marset was a dangerous narco.
On November 15, Balbi maintained that there was no impediment for Marset to obtain a Uruguayan passport once he was released..
On the 17th, Balbi spoke to Ache. The then vice-chancellor assures that the message was to request an audience for “foreign ministry issues”, without going into specifications. The lawyer asked the Foreign Ministry to start the process “urgently” that day, as reported by the consular section from Abu Dhabi.. At the same time, the consulate in the United Arab Emirates suggests to the ministry that it would be “prudent” to wait until the Emirati trial for the false Paraguayan passport is over, “unless the superiors decide otherwise.”
For their part, on November 24, Balbi and Ache met. The then vice-chancellor would assure months later in the interpellation that the lawyer had only asked her when the next diplomatic bag would leave and that she had not spoken to him about any specific client. By then she had already received two consultations from the Undersecretary of the Interior, Guillermo Maciel.
On that same day, the deputy director of the Civil Identification Directorate, Alberto Lacoste, asked the Scientific Police to expedite the Marset process. The hierarch had met with the lawyer Balbi, who had made an explicit reference to his client’s case.
On November 29, as the diplomatic bag had departed, the lawyer Balbi asked for another alternative. His brother Carlos is authorized to process the “exceptional” way to lift it himself given the “urgency” expressed.
And then on November 30, Carlos Balbi raised his passport.
