The transatlantic offer of the Portuguese airline TAP Air Portugal will be expanded with 17 additional flights per week, with destinations that include Brazil, the United States and Venezuela.

With this update to its offer, the airline recovers the frequency of flights and destinations it had before the pandemic, when it was forced to stop its activity and gradually resume it to avoid contagion by covid-19 during 2020 and 2021.

TAP is the state airline of Portugal. In recent months, thanks to the impact the company suffered as a result of the pandemic, the State has considered selling it to a private actor.

In mid-September it was learned that the Portuguese government would launch a privatization of 50% of the company, and that among the main candidates to acquire that percentage would be Lufthansa and Air France-KLM, despite the interest of groups such as IAG-parent company Iberia and Vueling.

TAP is one of the few airlines that is not part of any international group and with the arrival of the covid-19 pandemic, it had to be rescued again with public money. The European Commission approved public aid of around 3,200 million euros.

In 2019 TAP represented more than 50% of arrivals and departures at Lisbon International Airport. However, the Portuguese government recognized that the company would close the 2022 financial year with losses and would not make a profit until 2025.
