Many relatives of the victims of police brutality buried their dead amid cries of pain and cries for justice. The Andean country is experiencing the most massive demonstrations in recent years after the dismissal and arrest of Pedro Castillo, with claims against the new interim president and the desire for a way out of the political instability that has plagued Peru for years. The IACHR, for its part, condemns the dead and prepares a technical visit for next January.
The IACHR explained that the Peruvian State extended a formal invitation from December 20 to 22, to carry out a visit to the country with the purpose of “taking notice of the events that arose as a result of the constitutional vacancy of former President Pedro Castillo Terrones, when he tried to produce a coup d’état on December 7 in progress.”
In addition, the rapporteur of the Inter-American Commission for Peru (IACHR), Stuardo Ralón Orellana condemned the deaths that occurred in the context of the protests in Peru. “The facts must be investigated and those responsible must be punished. My solidarity with the families of the victims,” said the official who is due to visit Peru in January of next year.
Repression takes the lives of 24 people
This weekend, the Ministry of Health reported that so far there are 24 people who have died in the context of the protests due to the advancement of general elections. According to this ministry, 9 people died in Ayacucho, the region hardest hit during the era of terrorism in the 1980s and 1990s; 6 people in Apurímac; 3 in the Junín region; 3 in La Libertad, 2 in Cusco and 1 in Arequipa.
In addition to the police repression, this weekend there were arbitrary arrests and searches of the headquarters of peasant organizations, including the Confederation of Peasant Communities where 26 people were arrested. These arrests occurred almost parallel to Dina Boluarte’s speech in which the current president asked to be allowed to work.
This weekend too, the Executive Power decreed mandatory social immobilization for five days in the province of Huamanga, in the Ayacucho region. This occurs within the framework of the state of emergency dictated by the government for the next 30 days due to the massive protests that demand the advancement of elections at the national level.
