More than 6 million Venezuelan migrants and refugees have left and continue to emigrate from the country, in what has become the second largest displacement crisis in the world, according to UNHCR figures.
Regarding International Migrants Day, which is commemorated every December 18, President Nicolás Maduro called for “dignified and more humane treatment for people who left their country of origin and who suffer discrimination and xenophobia in the world,” a message that sent via a post on his twitter account.
Maduro limited himself to mentioning in the brief message: “To our sisters and brothers we say: Venezuela will always have open arms to receive you.” Although last September, Maduro assured that more than half of the population that migrated between 2018 and 2021 had returned to the countrythe most recent figures released by UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, show another picture.

Beyond a specific message associated with an anniversary, the Venezuelan government’s response to the migration crisis and the consequences it has generated in neighboring countries has gone through several stages: first it was to deny the magnitude of the diaspora, then they affirmed through from the spokesperson of senior government representatives that migrants had been manipulated and deceived to leave the country and more recently, Maduro has recognized the number of people who continue to leave the country, but at the same time he has assured that more than half of this group has returned to Venezuela.
On December 16, a group of 249 Venezuelans returned to Venezuela from Peru through the Return to the Homeland Plana program launched by the government in September 2018 to facilitate the return of those who chose to return.
But even if the official figures account for an approximate of 30,000 Venezuelans who have opted for this program to return in the last four yearsthe data barely represents 0.5% of the number of migrants that remains an estimated number that exceeds 6 million Venezuelans outside the country.
