Santiago. The president of the Conference of the Dominican Episcopate trusted that in 2023 education, the culture of honesty, the eradication of corruption and the maturity of Dominican politicians could be consolidated.
In a document where he expresses his wishes at Christmas and for the new year, Monsignor Freddy BretonArchbishop of Santiago and president of the highest body of the Church, collects his wishes for the year 2023.
The Catholic prelate ponders that the spirit of Christmas has not died and questions the mercantile effort that makes more noise and has “better press” than the large number of people who enjoy spiritually because of the newborn Child in the poverty of a manger.
“I think that in our people there is still a lot of that, although it must be recognized that very strong winds are blowing that try to annihilate the spirit of Christmas. Mostly winds from where Christmas is almost no longer lied by its name, because it smells of Christ. Now it says “Happy Holidays”, which can be anything.
Monsignor Martínez Bretón asks to preserve “the authentic values of our people, as is the true spirit of Christmas.”
When asking for his wishes for 2023, he says that “I would like to see Education effectively consolidated, at all levels: family, school, higher… With a neat management of the money earmarked for that purpose.”
In the same way, it asks to see prioritized the cultivation of values, especially respect for the dignity of the human person and to see honesty shine in public servants and in private life, especially in young people, as a top quality.

Another request from the Archbishop of Santiago is that all citizens recognize the selfless work of the military and police, for the good of the Homeland, and that the competent authorities finally manage to extirpate the malignant tumor of corruption that sickens a part of those bodies, as well as well as other sectors of society.
Monsignor Martínez Bretón trusts that there is no need for repatriations from our territory; and if there is, that it be carried out in strict adherence to the laws and with absolute respect for the dignity of the human person.
Remember that 2023 is a pre-electoral year and raise your request that both political parties and the general public show sufficient maturity.

Resignation
Archbishop Bretón Martínez presented his resignation letter to Pope Francis in May of this year, upon reaching the age of 75, in compliance with canon law. The resignation is effective when the pope deems it convenient.
