Government activates plan to promote the prevention of H5N1 avian influenza

The H5N1 avian flu affects birds, although its transmission to humans is possible by approaching infected birds with excretions: saliva, nasal secretions or feces.

According to the Ministry of Health, the national government activated the National Action Plan for promotion and avian influenza preventionas well as care routes in positive or suspected cases.

Through social networks, the agency reported that this plan, of which they did not offer further details, is developed together with the Ministry of Ecosocialism, the Ministry of Science and Technology, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture, at the same time that they highlighted maintaining the monitoring and epidemiological surveillance in the country.

On December 2, the Government declared through a resolution dated November 29a health alert in the states Anzoátegui, Nueva Esparta, Vargas, Miranda and Sucre after detecting several birds with the H5N1 bird flu.

The text indicates that “inspection, monitoring and epidemiological surveillance” activities in the population of Puerto Píritu, in Anzoátegui state, evidenced the presence of “clinical signs” compatible with avian influenza in pelicans.

The health alert, according to the authorities, will be maintained for 90 days due to the high danger of this disease, which mainly affects wild and poultry birds. These states will remain in quarantine and others could be incorporated according to epidemiological investigations.

During 2022, several outbreaks of avian influenza have been detected, whether in domestic, wild or farm birds, in the United States, Canada, Colombia, Mexico and recently Peru, where deaths of pelicans corresponding to this type of influenza were recorded.

The H5N1 avian flu affects birds, although its transmission to humans is possible by approaching infected birds with excretions: saliva, nasal secretions or feces.

Avian influenza manifests itself with a low respiratory condition, with a dry cough, high fever and often with diarrhea and nosebleeds; unlike normal influenza, which begins with a runny and blocked nose, sore throat, and upper respiratory symptoms.
