Peru entered its eleventh day of conflict. The crisis of the neighboring country affects Bolivia due to millionaire losses in exports and also because there are Bolivian tourists stranded on the Peruvian side. The National Chamber of Exporters (Caneb) calculated yesterday at least 20 million dollars of economic impact because trucks carrying Bolivian cargo to Peru cannot cross the border.

According to him president of the Departmental Chamber of Heavy Transport, Ramiro Sullcani, there are at least 2,800 trucks that are stranded on the Peruvian side. These motorists are the ones who bring merchandise to Bolivia. In addition, the representative of the Bolivian Chamber of Transportation, Beatriz Patón, said that there are ten buses trapped on Peruvian highways.

“Per day, 4.6 million dollars move (in exports to Peru), there are about 230 trucks (per day) that leave for that country and 70% of the cargo is oilseed”remarked Marcelo Olguín, manager of Caneb.

The leader of the export sector added that 12% of the country’s total exports leave through Peru, mainly grains, in addition to alcohol, rice and others, but also raw materials enter Bolivia like iron and at this time of year, merchandise for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

For his part, Patón reported that there are Bolivian tourists trapped on Peruvian roads, especially those who went to the city of Cusco. “They are asking for help, so we have asked the Government to give them that facility so that they can be escorted to the buses. and they can reach their destinations, because now we don’t know how we are going to cross, they don’t let them pass and tourists don’t have anything to eat,” said Patón.

The national strike against the Peruvian president, Dina Boluarte, began last Monday; however, the crisis began on December 7 after the dismissal and subsequent arrest of former president Pedro Castillo, who that day tried to close the Peruvian Congress to avoid his dismissal. The Desaguadero border point was closed and the losses exceeded 20 million dollars in the last five days.
