The seven-year-old boy, who received an antivenom serum late after a snake bite, died this afternoon at the Institute of Tropical Medicine.
The Ministry of Public Health confirmed the death of the minor, who had been left brain dead as a result of the death of a snake and the late attention he received in Canindeyú.
The event occurred when the little one was sleeping in his room. Initially, they transferred him to the Curuguaty District Hospital, where they applied the first doses of anti-venom serum. However, due to the delay in referral, his neurological evolution was not as expected.
Later they took him to the Institute of Tropical Medicine, where after a tomography he was diagnosed with brain death. Finally this afternoon his death was confirmed.
Dr. Óscar Merlo, director of this hospital, considered that the anti-venom serum was not applied on time and that this aggravated the child’s condition and reduced his chances of survival.
According to Public Health figures, this year there were 204 reptile bites. This number is the annual average. However, fatal leads are not common.
