President Gabriel Boric announced four bills to address the country’s security crisis in crimes such as carrying weapons and assassination.
The President announced these measures during a discussion in Peñalolén, where he stressed that prison security will be improved to prevent inmates from planning crimes from inside them.
“We are here to talk about what without a doubt is today the main priority of all our neighbors: security. We know that security is an enabling condition to be able to talk about anything else,” said the President.
He also expressed that “the feeling of insecurity in our country has increased, because violent crimes have also increased. (…) I want you to know that I get up and go to bed thinking about how to improve security.”
“For this, we have the work that we have been improving in terms of budget, improving in terms of implementation of the police, such as the increase in the budget for the Carabineros,” he said.
The President stated in the first place, “we have aggravated the penalties for crimes of kidnappings. Kidnapping is not a crime that we are used to in Chile, however, we have seen how little by little it has been installed and we are not going to allow it to naturalize ”, he explained.
Second, “we are increasing the penalties for those who carry arms in crowded places (…) today that is not well regulated in the code and as a result of a series of circumstances you can be given a penalty that is negligible,” he said.
According to the prison security“There are many crimes that are planned from prisons. How is that possible? I want you to know that we are improving prison technology to totally block cell phone signals inside prisons, so that crimes cannot be planned” the President pointed out.
Finally, he affirms that “there is a relatively new phenomenon in Chile that is dangerous, that we also do not want to naturalize, that we have seen it in other countries where it is widespread and we do not want it to settle in our country, which is the hit man. That today is not sufficiently regulated and therefore we are establishing penal sanctions for those who conspire to commit a hit man,” he argued.
