Santander appoints Felipe García Ascencio as head of Mexico

The appointment of García Ascencio will be from January 1, the same date that Héctor Grisi will be CEO of Banco Santander in place of José Antonio Álvarez.

García Ascencio said last week that they seek to double the business in the coming years and to achieve this they will invest up to 50 million dollars annually.

Until the third quarter of the year, Santander had a network of 1,036 branches, 9,564 ATMs and 19.5 million customers.

“In recent months as CEO, Felipe has had the opportunity to prepare very well to assume maximum responsibility for the country’s businesses and I am sure he will do a great job. On my recent visit to Mexico last November, I was able to reaffirm my confidence that Mexico is one of the most dynamic markets and with the greatest potential of the group”, said Ana Botín, president of Santander at a global level.

Career of Felipe Garcia

Felipe García joined Grupo Santander in 2020.

Before being appointed CEO of Santander Mexico, he was responsible for the wholesale banking business (Santander Corporate & Investment Banking) in the country.

Felipe García has a degree in Economics from ITAM and a Master’s in Economics from the London School of Economics.

He has more than 25 years of experience in banking, having held leadership positions for Mexico and Latin America in entities such as Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs.

He began his professional career at the Public Debt Office of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit.
