Swimming: Elisbet Gámez breaks Cuban record in Melbourne World Championship

Elisbet Gámez established a new Cuban record in the 100-meter freestyle event in a 25-meter pool, stopping the clocks in 54.87 seconds this Tuesday during her participation in the XVI World Championship Short Course Swimming Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

Gámez became the first Cuban to manage to go below 55 seconds in that modality. In this way, she pulverized her own record of 55.14 seconds that she had established in Thailand, where she is preparing thanks to a scholarship granted by the International Federation of Swimming (Fine), according to a note from the sports portal Hit.

Despite her remarkable mark, Elisbet Gámez was ranked 34th among the 63 competitors registered in the test. Only 16 advanced to the semifinal phase and 12 of them set times below 53 seconds.

The best time (52.04) was achieved by Siobhan Bernadette Haughey, from Hong Kong, with experience in two Olympic Games and silver medalist in the 100 and 200-meter freestyle at the Tokyo 2020 summer event.

Elizbet, 25 years old, also owns the national record for the distance in the 50-meter pool with a mark of 55.51 seconds, achieved at the 2018 Barranquilla Centro-Caribbean Games.

Who is considered the best Cuban swimmer of the moment will appear again at the World Cup on December 17, as she is enrolled in the 200-meter freestyle event, in which specialists set her best chances.

One day before, Cuba will be represented in the universal event by Rodolfo Falcón, son of the stellar swimmer who won the silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, up to now the best result in the history of swimming. in Cuba.

Falcón Jr. plans to venture into the 800-meter freestyle with the purpose of improving his personal best.
