the supreme prosecutor Uriel Teranof the Second Supreme Criminal Prosecutor, requested the Supreme Court of Preparatory Investigation to order 18 months of preventive detention against the former president Pedro Castillo and the former chief of staff Hannibal Torres for the alleged crimes of rebellion and conspiracy in which they would have incurred in the attempted coup d’état, according to sources from The Republic.
The fiscal requirement was presented after the supreme judge John Checkley Soriaof the Supreme Court of Preparatory Investigation, approved the formalization of the preliminary investigation against the former head of state and the former president of the Council of Ministers.
Now, Checkley Soria, within a period of no more than 48 hours, must call a hearing to evaluate the request of the Public Ministry. Meanwhile, the preliminary detention issued against Castillo Terrones will be extended until the corresponding ruling is issued.
Castillo’s appeal against preliminary detention was rejected
This Tuesday, the Permanent Criminal Chamber rejected the appeal filed by the defense of former President Pedro Castillo against the preliminary detention for 7 days imposed on him by the Supreme Court of Preparatory Investigation.
The Chamber presided over by Supreme Judge César San Martín confirmed that the arrest of Castillo Terrones, carried out while he was going to the Embassy of Mexico after his last message to the nationwas adjusted to the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code.
“The person under investigation intended to get away from criminal prosecution by resorting to the figure of the right of diplomatic asylum, whose first steps he had already taken, as recognized by the President of Mexico and the ambassador of that country in Peru,” the resolution reads.
