US congressmen ask Biden to extend the immediate border expulsion

A federal judge ordered that the US Government cease as of December 21 the use of Title 42, a controversial health regulation that former President Donald Trump resorted to, protected by the pandemic, to expel migrants from his territory

Congressmen from both parties asked US President Joe Biden to extend Title 42 for the expedited expulsion of migrants at the border beyond December 21, fearing a new massive wave of migration that was already experienced on Sunday in El Paso (Texas), after the arrival of some 1,500 people seeking asylum.

“We have a crisis at our southern border,” Texas legislators John Cornyn, Tony González and Henry Cuéllar and West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin said in their letter.

“Never before in our nation’s history have we experienced this magnitude of illegal border crossings and we are concerned that your government has not provided sufficient support or resources to maintain border security,” the congressmen said in their letter.

The Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Alejandro Mayorkas, visited this Tuesday the city of El Paso (Texas), where some 1,500 migrants turned themselves in between the night of Sunday the 11th and Monday the 12th at US authorities seeking asylum.

Migrants saturated the city’s services and shelters and many slept on the streets enduring the low temperatures.

Mass migration occurs within a week of foreseeable end of Title 42established during the Government of Donald Trump (2017-2021) and under which more than 2.7 million expulsions of migrants have been carried out.

A federal judge ordered that the Government cease as of December 21 the use of the controversial health norm to which Trump resorted under the protection of the pandemic.

“We urge you to do everything within your power to extend Title 42 beyond the December 21 deadline and until Congress can act,” the lawmakers added.

Human rights groups, religious congregations and immigrant advocates have insisted for two years that the use of Title 42 is cruel, that it violates the right of migrants to a hearing on their asylum claims, and that it exposes those expelled to dangerous conditions in Mexico.
