The volume of services in the country fell by 0.6% from September to October this year. It is the sector’s first negative result since February. From March to September, when the indicator reached its highest point in the historical series, it accumulated an increase of 5.8%.
The data – from the Monthly Services Survey (PMS) – were released today (13), in Rio de Janeiro, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
In other types of comparison, however, the volume of the sector increased by 9.5% compared to October 2021, 8.7% in the year and 9% in 12 months.
Despite the drop from September to October, services are still at a level of 10.5% above that observed in the pre-pandemic period (February 2020).
“Something that contributed to the October result was the high basis for comparison after the services sector reached the highest value in the historical series last month. The higher level is mainly due to the provision of services aimed at companies, in which we observe companies that provide information technology services as great exponents”, said research manager Rodrigo Lobo.
Fall
The decline from September to October was driven by three of the five activities analyzed, with emphasis on transport (-1.8%). All transport segments had decrease in all modes: land (-1%), waterway (-0.6%), air (-10.1%) and storage and mail (-1.2%). Passenger transport dropped 5.5% and cargo, 2%.
Services provided to families also fell (-1.5%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.8%).
At the same time, information and communication services (0.7%) and other services (2.6%) rose.
Nominal revenue from services rose 0.2% compared to September, 15.3% compared to October 2021, 16.4% in the year and 16.3% in the 12-month period.
