Pedro Castillo rejects call for new elections in Peru

Pedro Castillo "picks ahead" and dissolves Congress before discussing his vacancy

Through a handwritten letter from prison, former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo described the recently sworn in as provisional president Dina Boluarte as a usurper. The former ruler, dismissed after trying to carry out a coup against Parliament, demanded his freedom and the holding of a Constituent Assembly

The former president of Peru Pedro Castillo rejected the announcement of early elections that Dina Boluarte, recently sworn in as provisional president, made in the early hours of the morning of December 12, in an attempt to stop the wave of protests that broke out after the dismissal and subsequent arrest of Castillo.

Through a handwritten letter from prison, Castillo asked for her “immediate release” and described Boluarte as a “usurper.” In the letter, he assured the public that he remains “unconditionally faithful to the popular and constitutional mandate that I hold as president, and I will not resign or abandon my high and sacred functions.”

He branded the accusations that have been made against him, in which he has been accused of trying to carry out a coup as “the same snot and drool of the coup right.” In his letter, Pedro Castillo assured that he feels humiliated, incommunicado, mistreated and kidnapped.

“The people should not fall for their dirty game of new elections. Enough of the abuses, Constituent Assembly now, immediate freedom,” she added.

The Peruvian Congress dismissed Pedro Castillo for moral incapacity, a few hours after the former president ordered his temporary dissolution.

That same day, Congress swore in Dina Boluarte as president, becoming the first woman to reach the highest office. During his first speech As president, she called for a broad process of dialogue between all the political forces “represented or not in Congress” and requested a “political truce” to establish a government of “national unity.”

Boluarte promised to end state corruption and reported that his management would be until July 28, 2026.
