Deputies endorsed the bill that would allow indefinite reelection in the Unachi rectory

The deputies that make up the Education Commission of the National Assembly enacted this Wednesday Bill No. 183, which has been the target of criticism from different sectors in Chiriquí and Panama, as they have stated that it would allow indefinite reelection in the rectory of the Autonomous University of Chiriquí (Unachi).

The deputy president of the Education Commission, Alina González, declared that this adoption does not mean that the norm is written in stone.

He recalled that from now on there is an opportunity for all sectors to participate in their discussion.

The bill was endorsed with five votes in favor and four abstentions.

When asked about the request from different sectors of Unachi, that this bill be shelved because it shields the indefinite re-election of Rector Etelvina de Bonagas, she replied that when discussed it will be strengthened and those opinions will be taken into consideration.

The proponent of this bill is the PRD deputy Raúl Pineda, who assured that there would be a discussion of the norm in the province of Chiriquí.

Pineda argued that the objective of the bill is to give stability to Unachi officials.

Etelvina de Bonagas was elected, for the first time, for the period 2013-2018. After modifications to the law in 2017, she was able to opt for reelection, due to a unique exception that the law of that time raised, since the organization of Unachi was modified during her term. In this way, she was elected for the 2018-2023 administration.
