President of Peru proposes to advance elections to 2024 and declares a state of emergency

Dina Boluarte, president of Peru, announced that she will present a project to advance the elections in her country by April 2024. “My duty as president in the current difficult time is to interpret, read and gather the concerns of the vast majority of Peruvians, the collective interest of the Nation, the commitment to the Homeland,” said

The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, announced early this Monday, December 12, that she will present to the Congress of the Andean nation a project to advance elections for April 2024, after the deepening of the political crisis in the country after deposing Pedro Castillo.

Meanwhile, protests in favor of Castillo have been registered in the last hours in various sectors of the country such as Apurímac, Ica, Arequipa, Cajamarca and Andahuaylas, where two protesters died in clashes with the police. There, the Peruvian president decreed a state of emergency.

“Interpreting the will of the citizenry in the broadest way, I have decided to take the initiative to reach an agreement with Congress to advance the elections for the month of April 2024,” said Boluarte in his morning speech.

He stated in his speech that, upon assuming the presidential mandate, he would seek dialogue, understanding and consensus among all, just as he reiterated the democratic vocation to serve the country. She said that she was elected on the government board that she legitimately won and that from there she is committed to serving Peru.

“I have assumed the presidency in a situation of political crisis that demands serious institutional reforms. Governing means representing the interests of all Peruvians and those who have less. My duty as president in the current difficult time is to interpret, read and collect the concerns of the vast majority of Peruvians, the collective interest of the Nation, the commitment to the Homeland,” said the president.

He also stated that until the elections are called, the agreement in Congress will be promoted on a law to reform the political system “that allows all Peruvians to have a more efficient, transparent and participatory democratic system of government” and that also allows minimizing the influence of corruption.

On the other hand, the Congress of Peru approved during the early hours of this Monday, December 12, a resolution that allows the lifting of a special jurisdiction against former President Pedro Castillo so that he does not go through a merit trial; which opens the possibility of prosecution and investigations by the Prosecutor’s Office.

This resolution was approved with 67 votes in favor and 45 against to give rise to a legal cause, since Castillo’s seven-day preventive detention expires on Wednesday, December 14.

The legislative resolution points to Castillo as the alleged co-author of the commission of crimes against the powers of the State and the constitutional order as a result of the failed coup attempt that took place on December 7.
