The Undersecretary of State for USA for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nicholsreminded the political prisoners of the regimes of Nicaragua, Cuba Y Venezuela, within the framework of International Human Rights Day that is commemorated every December 10.
“Right now there are more than 1,400 people unjustly detained in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. This is the cost of dissent in these countries,” the US official warned on his Twitter account.
He warned that the United States “will continue to raise its voice for political prisoners, for democracy, for the right to freedom of expression until they are released.”

«Musicians, politicians, artists, brothers, sisters, fathers, daughters, sons. His crime? Speak out for democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. Let’s unite to raise our voices until these political prisoners are released,” added Nichols.
“The price for dissent” in dictatorships has left more than 220 political prisoners in Nicaragua, more than 240 political prisoners in Venezuela and more than a thousand in Cuba.
The United States expressed its solidarity with the families of those imprisoned by the regimes of Daniel Ortega, Nicolás Maduro and Miguel Díaz-Canel and with all citizens who ask their governments to respect human rights.
According to the Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisoners of Nicaragua, as of November 30, there were 235 people deprived of liberty for political reasons in the country. Of which 225 were detained after the social protests that began in April 2018.

Of those incarcerated, 26 are women and 208 are men. Five are in isolation; eight, in punishment cells; and 68, in maximum security cells.
Ortega has ex-presidential candidates, businessmen, journalists, bankers, clergymen, political analysts and activists in jail.
