Corruption Perceptions Index measured bribery and the use of public funds for personal gain in 2021

In 10 years, Panama has not recorded significant progress in the fight against corruption, according to the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) of Transparency International.

This Tuesday, January 25, this report was released, revealing that in 2021 Panama obtained a rating of 36 points out of 100 (0 rampant corruption – 100 no corruption), one point more than in 2020, but two less than in 2012, the year when the country was evaluated with 38 points.

The Executive Director of the Foundation for the Development of Citizen Freedom, Panamanian Chapter of Transparency International, Olga de Obaldía, pointed out that we are seeing a measurement that covers three different administrations and there is no solution for the issues measured by the index.

“Last year in Panama, the IPC measured bribery and diversion, use of public funds for personal gain or the benefit of specific groups, nepotism, state capture,” he said.

He added that we must look at how the levels of corruption in the country impact the real daily life of citizens, how their human rights are impacted from the point of view of being able to receive decent services.

In the ranking of Panama, it was in the same position as Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Moldova and Peru, all with 36 points. Globally, it ranked 105th out of 180 countries evaluated.
