Electric vehicles increase after the pandemic in the Dominican Republic

The first electric vehicles functional vehicles emerged in the 1880s, but were displaced by internal combustion vehicles, since they were faster and the cost of fuel was cheaper.

Until a few years ago these vehicles were not very popular in the Dominican Republic. However, electric cars are currently on the rise, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, sales of this type of vehicle reached 41% more than in 2019.

In the same order, in August of this year, 4,452 cars and 5,523 motorcycles, all electronic, entered the Dominican territory.

There are more than 5 million vehicles in the country, with 45% in the metropolitan region.

These data were released in a diploma course on the electricity sector carried out by the state electricity distribution company Edesur.

Companies that support the growth of electric vehicles in the DR

On December 2 the popular Bank held an autofair dedicating the whole day to the special promotion of eco-friendly vehicles, calling it “Eco Day at the Popular Autofair”.

They explained that currently, through the Hazte Eco green finance portfolio, the credit portfolio for hybrid and electric vehicles exceeds RD$1,020 million, with an average financing of RD$2.9 million per car.

This company marked a local milestone by being the first automotive fair that had a total of 45 models of hybrid and electric vehicles, which could be financed.

Electric vehicles are those powered by one or more motors that are powered by stored electrical energy, usually in a rechargeable battery.

Regarding savings, the certificate indicated that a Nissan Leaf is capable of traveling 35 km with a consumption of 6.06 kWh paying approximately ±66 pesos (10.89 RD$/kWh), while for a conventional vehicle that travels 35 km You need a gallon of gasoline that cost 293.60 pesos in August 2021 (Savings 85%), this calculated with the price of fuel in August 2022.

On the other hand, the Dominican State promulgated Law 103-13 (its application began in 2018) which establishes that electric vehicles pay only 50% of Tariff, ITBIS and First Plate.
