One year after Ortega slapped Taiwan, China celebrates with a dictatorship

Nicaragua and China celebrated the first anniversary of the reestablishment of their diplomatic relations, made official on December 10, 2022, the Nicaraguan government reported this Friday.

Bilateral relations were celebrated last night, with a cultural act behind closed doors, at the Rubén Darío National Theater, the most important artistic scene in Nicaragua, indicated the local government, through official media.

“We have many reasons to celebrate thanks to the personal attention of the top leaders and joint efforts from all sectors of our two countries. Political trust has been consolidated more and more, mutually beneficial cooperation has developed fruitfully, cultural and humanistic exchanges have developed dynamically,” said the Chinese ambassador to Nicaragua, Chen Xi, in words quoted by the official media.

The government of President Daniel Ortega reestablished relations with China last December, immediately after breaking with Taiwan, one of its best economic partners and its main cooperator at the time of the break.

“For us it is a very special date, it has been a year of intense work between the two nations, exchanges, cooperation and solidarity; of the People’s Republic of China at almost all times with Nicaragua, which has also been reciprocal,” said presidential adviser Laureano Ortega Murillo, son of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo.

During the first year of relations, Nicaragua and China signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a “political consultation mechanism”, a mutual support “macro agreement”, another on commercial cooperation, and one more to exempt visa holders of diplomatic passports of both countries.

China also finances a social interest housing program, and grants scholarships to Nicaraguan students.

More recently, President Ortega has shown his support for the “new multipolar world order”, promoted by China and Russia, and which aims to end the global leadership of the United States and the West, according to Managua.
