The journalist and general secretary of the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP), Marco Ruiz and the indigenous leader Virgilio Trujillo, murdered on June 30 in Amazonas; were awarded the Human Rights Award (DDHH) granted by the Canadian Embassy in Venezuela, reported the diplomatic headquarters this Saturday, December 10, through its Twitter account.
«The Embassy of Canada in Venezuela, in collaboration with the Coalition and Chairs of University Centers for Human Rights (DDHH), are pleased to announce that Marco Ruiz and Virgilio Trujillo (posthumous tribute) are the winners of the 12th edition of the Human Rights Award Humans,” the embassy trilled.
This recognition seeks to highlight the international principles of Human Rights as a priority of Canada’s Foreign Policy in the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The winners
Marco Antonio Ruiz Silvera is a journalist and recognized activist for his work in defense of press freedom and freedom of expression. He has co-founded numerous organizations and coalitions to protect communicators and defend access to information (…) Virgilio Trujillo was a young activist committed to the comprehensive protection of the territory against illegal exploitation by armed groups, for which he was assassinated on June 30, 2022,” the embassy said.

The jury of this 12th edition was made up of Juan Carlos Barreto, director of the Center for Peace and Human Rights of the Central University of Venezuela (CPDH-UCV); Mayda Hocevar, director of the Human Rights Observatory of the Universidad de los Andes (ODH-ULA); Eduardo Trujillo Ariza, director of the Human Rights Center of the Andrés Bello Catholic University (CDH-UCAB); and Andrea Santacruz from the Human Rights Center of the Metropolitan University (CDH-Unimet) and members of Global Affairs.
