SKY manager in Peru: "The problem that the aeronautical sector has is infrastructure"

Despite the fact that there are no restrictions and the flights are already leaving normally, the aeronautical sector still faces some problems, such as strikes and poor at airports. SKY’s manager in Peru, José Raúl Vargas, talks about it.

Is it expected to reach pre-pandemic levels by the end of the year?

In the industry as a whole, what is expected is that the supply level reaches 100% in the domestic market. The international does come a little further back and is only expected to resume 100% towards the end of the first quarter of next year.

What has driven the domestic market?

It has been a combination of factors. The most important thing is that the pandemic subsided and restrictions were lifted. Coordination also not only with the health authorities, but also with those who see industry regulation issues… Added to this was the change in behavior of people who wanted to travel.

But tourism has not yet recovered.

That is much broader, they are concerns that are seen every day. For example, the capacity in Machu Picchu; Corpac that has announced a new strike. The feeling of insecurity does not help the American, European and Asian people want to return either.

How do these strikes affect the industry?

Beyond the fact that the American embassy recommends or fails to recommend flying to a city, we have a lot of competition with other countries, such as Chile and Colombia. The tourist who spends the most, which is American, Asian and European, plans their trip in advance, and now we see reservations drop even for National Holidays in 2023 and that takes time to recover.

Has the recovery been possible before?

Absolutely. In addition, (to the strikes) are added infrastructure problems due to lack of planning. The main problem in the sector is infrastructure. As a union we have permanently highlighted the sudden closures of airports. They wait for the airports to burst to start working and in the regions there are runways that are in poor condition.

Is there the challenge?

The infrastructure challenge is super complex. One can prepare, have contingency plans, but the impact on passengers continues to be monstrous.

Data

-In less than a month, SKY will announce two new national destinations.

-On an international level, José Raúl Vargas indicated that they are also evaluating two destinations. They also hope to increase the fleet they currently have.
