Cobra Grande, work by artist Frederico Filippi, premieres this Saturday (10) at the Sculpture Garden of the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in São Paulo, in Ibirapuera Park. The initiative is part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the space at the museum, which will be completed in 2023.
The new work, in the Sculpture Garden, deals with the felling of forests: it has the shape of a large chain, a device used as an ostensive deforestation technique. Cobra Grande is a life-size replica of this chain, which connects to two tractors at its ends, destroying vegetation quickly and abruptly.
“The work of Frederico Filippi, using clay, material taken from the earth and which will return to it, allows us to reflect on the perverse techniques of deforestation currently practiced. At the critical moment in which planet Earth finds itself, in the perspective of the environmental crisis, the work contributes to drawing attention to an urgent and fundamental issue”, highlights the chief curator of MAM São Paulo, Cauê Alves.
Parallel to the inauguration of Cobra Grande, warriors from the Guarani Mbya people, from the Jaraguá Indigenous Land, in the west zone of the capital of São Paulo, perform, on the MAM marquee, the Xondaro ritual, a training that the ancient indigenous people did to improve reflexes and resistance , a dance to learn to fight and a preparation for war, in order to protect the Guarani people from the attacks of the juruá (white man).
The inauguration of the work Cobra Grande will be from 10am to 12pm. The indigenous ritual, at 11 am and 2:30 pm.
