Fundaredes: There is a presence of armed groups in 75% of border schools

The absence of government authorities leaves room for armed groups on the border to interrupt school activities at educational institutions on the border, according to teachers surveyed by Fundaredes

The NGO Fundaredes, focused on the defense of human rights and the monitoring of guerrilla activity on the Venezuelan border, presented a report after applying 412 interviews in educational centers located in border areas in the states of Amazonas, Apure, Bolívar, Falcón, Tachira and Zulia.

According to this study, 75% of educational centers have some kind of close encounter with groups of armed civilians outside the law or even guerrillas. In none of the cases has State intervention been observed.

The most serious thing is that 89% of the teachers consulted who answered affirmatively about the presence of irregular groups assured that they interfere in the educational process.

While this is happening, the participation of the Ministry of Popular Power for Education is almost nil. 79.9% of those consulted assured that the governing body for educational policies in Venezuela has not been present, nor has it provided materials and supplies to schools.

For its part, 49.1% of the educational infrastructure of the border states is in precarious condition, according to the study by the NGO.

Schools and teachers in abandonment, according to Fundaredes

Teachers have also been subject to neglect by government authorities, according to surveys. Almost all of the teachers (97%) did not receive any type of endowment during this period.

Regarding student desertion, approximately 47.7% state that it remains between 25% and 75% in their institutions. For its part, teacher desertion remains at 43.7%.

“These are high numbers encouraged by various complex structural causes, which range from failures in the educational infrastructure to the serious economic crisis that the country is going through,” the study explained.

The report also indicates that 4 out of 5 teachers consulted in the border areas carry out an extra activity, other than teaching, to complement their economy in the face of poor wages in Venezuela. Percentage speaking, 79% of the teachers on the Venezuelan border must invent ways to generate additional income to face the humanitarian crisis in the country.

Of the total number of teachers who carry out a complementary activity other than education, 80% carry it out in an informal labor market.

49.9% of the teachers earn an income ranging from 300 to 500 bolivars, which for this December 9 represent between $21 and $35 per month when making the equivalence with the current official exchange rate, established at 14, 1 bolivars per currency.

However, it must be considered that the cost of products in Venezuela are marked in many places by the price of the parallel dollar, which already exceeds 18 bolivars per unit.
